Visiting Europe during the winter might be quite challenging for everybody due to the cold weather. Unlike any other countries in Europe that are so dead during the winter season, Italy is a year-round destination.
Planning to visit Venice Italy this coming winter season is totally fine and exciting. Most hotels are open, restaurants and shopping stores are in their regular store hours. Attraction sights and shows are still going on and you can still find ample of tourists walking around. Venice remains its beautiful charm, vivid and lively ambiance during the winter. It is even the most romantic and serene time to hop on board for your grandest Gondola dream ride. Venetian winter gives us the next vacation level experienced in our life.
I witnessed the beauty of Italy in two different season which is summer and the winter and every season have their own stories. Summertime in Italy is the amazing time of the year, longer days, happy people, performers displaying their talent in the streets, mouthwatering gelatos and so much more…, but there are so many reasons also you will love about the winter seasons. Most especially the winter in Venice Italy.
Here are the PROS and CONS when visiting Venice in the Winter
All over Europe during winter days, The daylight usually up until 15.00-16.00 only and in Italy daylight will last until 17.00 during winter so you really need to start your day early if you only have limited time. Other attraction sights close early so if you have plans to ride Gondola do it in the morning when the Fogs not so bad.
Venice Italy is located in Northern part of the country which is closer to Switzerland so the cold will really bother you. Though it’s not always every winter Venice will have snow, the foggy atmosphere makes the city really cold. It so cold that will make us want to stay in the restaurant or hotel all the time to feel warm, we even need to bundle up ourselves to feel us more comfortables.
Due to the foggy cloud when it’s so heavy already expect the pouring of rain.Venice in winter can be snow or rain, but most of the winter days it will going to rain. There are even days that the canals overflow the main street due to the nonstop rain and sometimes it’s flooded the whole street.
Hard to take Photos
Well, it’s not really that hard but due to dark clouds and foggy scene, it gives us hard time to take the stunning photos of the canals and skyscraper view. The rainy days and wet aisle make us terrified to take out our expensive camera and mobile phone to capture photos.
One of the advantages, why traveler wants to travel during winter is because most of the price will drastically go down. Airfare, hotels, restaurants and even ticket museum sometimes they give it for free. Most of us know that Italy is not a cheap destination to visit but in winter I can really say they have price difference than summer and ordinary days. Price is more affordable in winter.
We can still find ample of tourist around even in the winter but the crowd is manageable and serene. It gives us a lot of opportunities to see and explore the areas without bumping with other travelers due to the heavy crowd around. The queues in Museum, churches and Gondolas pier are not so long and so easy to take access to all the establishment in the city.
Romantic Gondola Ride
Winter is actually the perfect time to hop on board when the Gondolier sings a song it became more romantic, for sure you can really hug your partner if you ride with them due to the coldness and the calmness of the surroundings. The canals are less crowded during the winter season and the canals are hauntingly quiet and feel like you are in the movie, you can even ask the Gondolier to lower the price if you know how to haggle.
For avid shopper, this is the best time to do shopping in Venice most stores are in winter sales from clothes, bag apparels and etc. are quite affordable and Selected famous brand like Chanel, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Prada more… are on Winter sales also.
When you visit around the end of January to February there are events every day because of the Venice Carnival. It is an annual open-air festival celebration that fills the city with music, dancing, and masked party-goers. You will see happy people wearing ball gowns everywhere, countless of masks stores alleys in the street.
We are in Italy last summer but we don’t have the chances to visit Venice, which is one of my Bucket lists that I want to see in Italy. Because we went to the Southern part of the country and it’s really impossible for me to go to Venice due to our limited time. So, I made a promised to myself to come back and visit the other part of Italy especially the Northern side. Finally, my wish came true we made it! Even in the midst of cold winter season we kick off ourselves and drove all the way from Milan to Venice with our Europe rental car with my boyfriend.
We arrived in Venice without any idea that it was in the middle of VENICE CARNIVAL. How lucky we are! I remembered I asked my boyfriend while we are walking in Grand Canal, Why are people dressing like they are going to MASQUERADE BALL? He doesn’t have any idea at all. We kept on walking and following the crowd of people up till we reached Saint Mark Basilica Square and found out that there are thousand of people in the area watching the show and it was Venice Carnival. It was so memorable and we have full of excitements going there.
